The Huron Valley Greens / Green Party of Michigan slate so far includes consumer advocate Ralph Nader for President and Gaia Kile for Washtenaw County Sheriff. This effort is being done in coordination with Green parties across the nation and other 3rd party coalitions. Currently, Mr. Nader is on the ballot in 6 states (Alaska, Colorado, Maine, New Mexico, Oregon, Hawaii), and will be in California, where the draft Nader campaign was born. Additionally, 25 other states are likely to achieve ballot status for Nader, and another 14 states (including Michigan) have campaigns under way but are considered long shots due to the large number of signatures needed and the late start to get them. If the Michigan petition drive falls short, a write-in campaign for Nader will be launched. Ralph Nader tells why he's running for president (NPR interview 4/3/96) -- "Well, it's been building over the years -- that is, the recognition that we really have one party: a corporate party with two heads, Republican and Democrat wearing different makeup -- and increasingly citizen groups are being shut out of their right to participate in government policy -- health and safety policy, environmental policy. Big money has taken over the elections, we all know that... These two parties can't even get out the vote. Over half the people don't even bother voting." Nader's "power-to-the-people" platform that he has been pushing for decades has gained support from all sides -- in the '92 New Hampshire primary he drew 52% from registered Republicans and 48% from democrats. With 8% support in recent nationwide voter polls, Nader is not running a traditional "horse race" campaign. In fact, Ralph Nader is not campaigning in the usual sense, at all. He is neither soliciting nor accepting campaign contributions and will spend no more than $5,000 of his own funds on campaign-related activities. Nader, 62, vaulted to national prominence with his 1965 book, titled "Unsafe at Any Speed," on the safety record of General Motor's Corvair. The resulting uproar about American-made cars' problems prompted Congress to adopt the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety and Highway Safety acts, to require seat belts, and to toughen crash standards. The Harvard-trained lawyer has gone on to found 28 nonprofit citizen advocacy groups, including Public Citizen and Public Interest Research Group, and to champion environmental protection, corporate accountability and campaign reform.
